In Brief

News from around the world

Kenya update
Extract from a message from Edward Buria:

‘I have just returned from a very exciting trip to the North East, where I personally joined our teams in purchasing over 50 camels, which will be distributed in Samburu. Our last distribution was shown as a major news item on television. What a testimony to the love and concern that God has for His people. It is becoming a very powerful way of preaching amongst these communities. As I witnessed the handing over of these camels in the midst of the expansive wilderness, the Holy Spirit spoke into my heart “for such a time as this”. God has raised us to be channels of hope, love and compassion as we faithfully steward His resources placed under our care.

‘As we drove for hours on our way back to Meru, I could not stop thanking God as I reflected on the events of the last year – the extent of our trials and suffering as a movement and nation, and how God’s faithfulness has been with us through the love and generosity expressed by the entire Newfrontiers family and also those outside. It has been a miracle that we have been able to sustain many thousands of people through all kinds of relief supplies for a whole year without our barns drying up.

‘We will continue to move on touching many with the love of God and preaching Jesus. I am so excited that God is for us. Hallelujah!’

‘All Around the World…’

It has been exciting to hear news from around the world from some of our newly-planted churches.

Table Bay, Cape Town, South Africa

‘Sunday 25th March was the beginning but also marked the end of a mission week where local residents and friends from South Africa and the UK had announced, ‘We are here!’ and shared the gospel – serving coffee to 1,000 people in the morning rush-hour traffic, beach fun days, car washes, door-to-door, community clean-ups and a football tournament. We even prayed with people for healing, deliverance and salvation!’
Wayne Noland

Durban, South Africa

‘On March 4th Hope Church, Durban was launched with 4,000 flyers and almost as many prayers. We’ve averaged an attendance of 100 every Sunday since. Over 70 have joined the church. 20 have been saved. A multi-racial leadership team including four different cultures has been formed. God is good!’
Drew Land

Southampton, UK

‘… we had been praying for 50 planters to launch with, and on the day had 53! We had also been praying for 100 at the church … and had just over 100 adults and 20 children. Praise God for all He is doing here … several guests wanted to join the church straight away, six signed up for Alpha …even had one guy saved on the street the day before the launch.’

Waidi Alawoe

Many have been praying for Waidi Alawoe, a young church leader in Ghana, who was diagnosed with a chronic Hepatitis B infection a few months ago. Waidi passed away on Saturday 16th April. This is a tribute written by John Kpikpi, who leads our churches in Ghana and was also Waidi’s uncle.

‘When Waidi first found Jesus he decided that only Christ mattered and he devoted himself to worship him and to serve him. He served on the Eldership Team of City of God Church and on the Apostolic Team for West Africa. His grasp of God’s truth made him a source of wisdom and strength as we handled the issues which confronted us daily in our work among the churches. We laughed together, prayed together, sorrowed over errant souls together and rejoiced in great victories together. He was a great companion in many of my journeys to serve our churches in Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Guinea and the UK.

‘Throughout everything his passion was to see people saved and brought into the kingdom of God. He  planted cell groups in many new areas and last year he pioneered our church plant, City on a Hill Church, in Asesewa.

‘Waidi was a real star who shone very brightly for a little while. We were privileged to share in the light that God gave through him.

‘Waidi, enjoy your time with the Lord. We’ll see you again later. John’
