In Brief

khanyisa community church, south africa

Through involvement in the housing programme in Tambo Village, Khanyisa were generously allocated land by the community in 1995 and have been working towards building their own Centre ever since.

‘Please let me know how much the opening today cost.

I would like to pay for it all. Not only do I want to sow into what you are doing here, but I want to thank you for giving me hope once again for building a non-racial community,’ said Ebrahim Rasool, Premier of the Western Cape, as he left the civil opening of the building at the end of September. Approximately 600 people from the community, including leaders and friends from NGOs, community service providers, political parties and surrounding homes, celebrated the community opening of Khanyisa Centre.

Khanyisa Community Church is a unique mix of people from the townships, southern and northern suburbs and other parts of the city, who meet together on a weekly basis and are involved in many aspects of life development – spiritual, emotional, social and physical.

Following his involvement in the Front Edge weekend in Holland, Stephen van Rhyn (Cape Town, South Africa) said, ‘For me, the Guest Service in Maastricht was the highlight in terms of seeing public healings and seeing folk respond to the gospel. This weekend was the ministry highlight of the year.’ For more information see Lex Loizides’ report on page 12.

March this year saw ‘The Father's House' in Smiltene become a Newfrontiers church plant. David and Ilze Jones moved from City Church, Cambridge, UK to Smiltene in 2002 and started a cell group in their apartment. Sunday morning worship now takes place in the local Family Crisis Centre, gathering up to 30 adults and a small number of children. The group has seen an increased rate of growth since last summer when several people were baptised in a local lake. Input from Newfrontiers pastors and friends visiting Smiltene from other European nations has been particularly valuable in helping to build the work on a firm, Biblical foundation. It has also given this small church, in a small town, a real sense of God's bigger picture and purpose. They are already starting to consider the need for a larger hall for Sunday meetings. Praise the Lord!

healing testimony

When Caress was fifteen she tore the ligaments in her knee and damaged the cartilage. She received hospital treatment and physiotherapy but rushed the recovery process and got back into sport sooner than she should have, causing permanent cartilage damage. This meant that running, walking or dancing resulted in severe pain. Caress was told that the only way to cure this problem was with surgery, which she could not afford. When Lex prayed for her at a meeting in Durban, South Africa, God wonderfully healed her knee. Ever since then she has been running 5k twice a week with her husband and hopes to increase the distance and frequency soon. She said, ‘This miracle has brought healing not only to me but to my marriage as well. I am so blessed!’
