Why do you plant churches when there are lots already?

The New Testament describes a number of ways new churches began. These include the preaching of the gospel to large crowds; giving an account before a few people; gathering a crowd through miracles taking place; and teaching in a home. Newfrontiers is involved in all of these. One particular area of success has been through Alpha courses, which continue to result in people coming to faith and small groups being started in various places - the beginnings of new church plants.

Many of our churches, some of which now number in the hundreds, started in a similar way with a small group meeting in someone's home. As we plant new churches, we also want to see churches grow to hundreds and even thousands.  Large churches can have a large impact upon a town or city and resource so much more.

"God has called us as a movement to this great task of planting churches. As God builds our family of churches into an army on the move I believe we will be amazed at the increasing rate churches will be planted." Colin Baron

" The need to model New Testament churches that are genuinely biblically based and are authentically open to the spirit is a huge challenge and is something we must fulfil" Terry Virgo

What is your church planting strategy?

We are working with apostolic teams across the nations and are flexible in our strategy to plant churches wanting to be open to the Holy Spirit's leading.  The Gospel not only needs to be proclaimed, but also to be demonstrated in tangible ways, and the best way is through Christians living out the Gospel together in a locality. In this way new communities are established, often in places that have not seen authentic Christianity outworked through the church. Whether in major cities and towns, or small rural communities, we long to help evangelise the nations through planting churches across the world.

What is your view of the church?

God's ultimate purpose is that the church should become a mature man, (Eph 4:13) a body with all its members functioning. Our view is of churches built on New Testament principles through receiving Ephesians 4 ministries, where the word of God is honoured and there is openness to the work of the Holy Spirit. We believe in a restored church - New Testament churches that are genuinely biblically based and are authentically open to the Spirit, where there is corporate worship and teaching. We believe in churches where each member participates; where the gifts of the Spirit are outworked;  where there is joy in caring one for the other; and where there is a desire to make a difference in society and to reach those in need.

How do you join Newfrontiers?

Newfrontiers is a family of churches that have chosen to work together under apostolic ministry. In this sense we work  relationally with churches that hold the same vision and values.  Those churches relating to Newfrontiers have chosen to do so following a time of building personal relationships between the leaders of the church and apostolic ministry.  For more about our vision and values read the About Us pages.

Which nations are Newfrontiers working into?

We are working into the continents of Asia, Australasia, Africa, Europe (East & West), North & Central America. To find out about the specific nations that we are working into please visit the International Homepage and select a country.

Are apostles for today?

When Jesus ascended on high, He gave apostles, prophets, evangelists and pastor/teachers. Many evangelical teachers have supposed that some of the ministries listed in Ephesians 4 were temporary and existed only in the early church, while others were permanent. They usually continue their argument by saying that the Scriptures are now complete. Since we have an authoritative canon of Scripture, including the writings of the apostles, we no longer need further apostles. They are preoccupied with the establishment of the canon of scripture rather than the pragmatics of the apostolic work of church planting and world evangelisation. Commentators from the reformation onwards have seen it as their responsibility to defend the scriptures from the Roman Catholic teaching of apostolic succession and ex-cathedra statements that claimed apostolic authority. They were not preoccupied with the ongoing missionary work of an apostle. The result was that local churches were seen as static and built on scripture, while isolated individuals could leave those churches and become 'missionaries'. In contrast, our burning passion is to see apostolic churches focussed on world mission together.

Do you believe in other itinerant ministries?

Paul tells us that when Jesus ascended He 'gave gifts to men' (Eph. 4:8). The leadership gifts are people: apostles, prophets, evangelists and pastor/teachers (Eph. 4:11) and their function is to 'prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up' (Eph. 4:12). These gifts, described in Ephesians 4, are given by God to stand alongside and assist local church leaders in fulfilling their commission to present every believer mature in Christ.

Within the Newfrontiers family we recognise these gifts as vital for fulfilling our mission. We are working with teams of gifted men serving existing churches as well as emerging church plants. Whilst these teams are predominantly working with churches in their locality, they are not only geographical but also built upon relationships. As a result some of these teams are also serving nations other than their own.
